Vila Real
Positioned at an altitude of 450 meters, Vila Real city frames itself in a privileged natural landscape. Blessed by nature, the city is enriched by high mountains, next to both the Marão and Alvão Mountain Ranges, which form the imposing backdrop of one of the most important cities in the transmontan province.
In spite of the city growing development, in an industrial, commercial and services level, Vila Real enhances its rural characteristics: if, on one hand has an abundant mountain zone, on the other hand has ledge vineyards that define the Douro proximity.
Due to the city’s peculiar geography, defined by the Alvão and Marão mountains, the climate suffers an extreme variation throughout the seasons. The rigorous and long winter gives place to a very hot summer.
Besides the typical and regional gastronomy that marks the Douro Valley region, the conventional making of candy and sweets helps to define the major part of the exceedingly rich city gastronomy.

The religious architecture finds in one of the oldest Portuguese bishoprics a unique way of expression, easily recognized in the several churches and chapels of the city.
